The Central Gulf Coast Teen Bible Quizzing ministry is part of the Nazarene Youth International organization.

The Central Gulf Coast District part of the Southeastern Region (“Field”) which includes districts in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Quizzing is focused on serving youth ages 12 and older. At some levels of competition, there are 2 divisions: A (Gold) and B (Silver). A teams are the more advanced level teams. These teams typically jump faster/sooner because they are more experienced.

  • Team: Quiz teams are made up of, at the most, five members. During quiz rounds, there are four quizzers and one substitute. Teams can be made of 2-4 four quizzers on occasion.

  • Coaches: Each team has one adult who serves as a coach.

  • Quizmaster: The quizmaster reads each question, recognizes the quizzer who got the question, and rules whether or not the answer given is correct or not.

  • Content Judge: The content judge listens for errors in the reading of the question and the answers, assists the quizmaster with ruling on answers, and keeps time.

  • Scorekeeper: The scorekeeper records the official team lineups, points gained or lost, and final scores.

  • Scoring: Correct answers to toss-up questions are worth 20 points. Correct answers to bonus questions are worth 10 points. Some errors cause a 10 point deduction.

  • Toss-up question: A question that is open to all teams; a correct answer is worth 20 points.

  • Bonus question: A question given to a specific member of a team after an error by their opponents; a correct answer is worth 10 points.

  • Error: An error is an incorrect answer to a toss-up question.

  • Appeal: An appeal occurs when the captain of a team has a concern with a question, such as how it was read, how it was worded or distractions that occurred while it was read.

  • Challenge: A challenge occurs when the captain of a team has a concern about the quizmaster's ruling of an answer to a toss-up question.

  • Question sets: A question set contains the 20 questions used in a given round and includes a separate list of questions to be available as replacement questions if needed.

Each quiz consists of 20 questions and lasts 20-30 minutes. Each team may have 4 quizzers sitting on the quiz seats at once. The first quizzer to jump off their seat, as determined by pressure-sensitive seat pads which light up the connected interface box, answers the question.

The quizmaster runs the quiz. When the quizmaster acknowledges the first quizzer to jump, that quizzer has 30 seconds to answer the question. If the quizmaster has not finished reading the question, the quizzer must finish the question and give the correct answer.

If the quizzer is not correct (did not finish the question correctly, or have the complete right answer, or both), the quizzer on the corresponding seat from the opposing team is given the opportunity to answer the question. If a quizzer answers 4 questions correctly, he or she "quizzes out" and leaves the quiz. If a quizzer has 3 errors, he or she "errors out" and leaves the quiz.

Each question set has a specific number of questions from each of 5 categories.

  • General (11)- general information

  • According to (4)- gives the specific verse and requires the quizzer to stay within the context of that verse for both their question and answer.

  • Quote (1), Finish this verse(1), or Finish this verse and give the reference (1)- These memory questions, on predesignated verses, must be quoted perfectly word for word.

  • Context (1) Tests quizzer ability to tie concepts together. Requires a quizzer to understand the context of the material studied, rather than specific words within a verse.

  • In what book and chapter (0 or 1) questions give a statement and the quizzer must say which book of the Bible and which chapter it is in. This type of question is used only in years that more than one book of the Bible is studied in the quiz year (which would be this year).

  • Situation (0 or 1)- describe a specific situation from a particular passage including situations like who said something, who did they say it to, and what was the response/outcome. This year, there are no situation questions; they are only used when quizzing on the gospels and Acts.
