Can parents get involved?

YES!

For parents: There is no one more important to your teen knowing God than you! Often teens become more independent, more friend-focused, and less transparent about their inner lives. Consequently, parents can find it difficult to know how to engage them spiritually in a way that is welcomed. It is a central desire of the Waywalker coaches that Bible quizzing be a means to help parents connect to and influence the spiritual life of their teens. The fun, competitive, and peer-engaged nature of Bible quizzing provides a motivation to read and understand the material.

If possible, commit to discipling your teen by reading and discussing the weekly assigned chapter. You don't need a theology degree. You don't need to be a great teacher. You only need to read and discuss, on average 27 verses. Some questions you might address are listed under the "Discipleship" page.

However, a parent may not be available. We will help your teen connect with a mentor-a trusted member of your church (or the Nazarene church, or the coach) who can contact your teen over phone, FaceTime, or Zoom each week to read through the assigned chapter, answer questions, and help your teen to understand the scripture they are learning.

Parents can get involved in other ways as they have the time and desire. Help is always welcome, but not expected. Once we find out how many teens will be involved in the league this year, specific needs could arise. For example, we might need an additional scorekeeper, quiz box operator, chaperone, driver for away trips, or carpool driver to local practices. Of course spectators and cheerleaders are always welcome at meets! It's unlikely we will have room in the quizzer van for away meets, but we love for parents to attend and carpooling is an option for those who don't want to miss a meet.

(By the way, if you happen to be a homeschool parent, quizzing makes for a great elective that will be of life-long value!)

How can churches support their youth who are involved in quizzing?

  • Encourage the teens in their body to investigate Bible quizzing through announcements or individual contact with the teens.

  • Reinforce the value of quizzing as a fun way to study scripture and deepen their faith.

  • Recognize the teens' achievements in front of the church body.

  • Reward diligent study of the Word by offering scholarships (if able) should their teen earn a top spot in the April regional competition and, should they be crazy outstanding at regionals-the June national competition. (In 2019, the April regional competition costs were $285 per quizzer).

  • Offer their church van, if the league outgrows the PCNaz van, to take teens to away competitions.

  • Identify mentors for teens whose parents aren't available to disciple them each week over a chapter in the Bible.

Churches can:

A teen's church, apart from his or her parents, is the most important factor for that child's spiritual growth. We respect and honor that responsibility your church has assumed. While a quiz coach or another spiritually mature adult from PCNaz would be willing to partner with your teen to fill the role of mentor, ideally, if the parent is unable, a trusted member from the teen's own local church body would fill that role. The quiz coaches are always available to parents, pastors, youth pastors, and mentors. Their prayer is that quizzing is an effective means of deepening connections between youth and their spiritual leaders.

A mentor should:
  • Exhibit Christ-likeness.

  • Commit to pray for their quizzer throughout the season.

  • Demonstrate and facilitate interest in and understanding of God’s Word.

  • Read the material out loud together with the quizzer.

  • Be prepared to answer questions regarding the passage.

  • Encourage the quizzer in both their learning and their competing.
  • Keep the focus on knowing and understanding the Word and not on winning and losing.

Traveling expenses

Local and district-level competitions do not have a cost. The only expense would be for meals during travel for away competitions. Quizzers may bring their own meals or money for a fast food lunch.

Panama City First Church of the Nazarene has established a Bible quizzing budget that includes transportation to and from quiz competitions. Space is limited as the van has a maximum capacity of 12. We are praying that a local church who has a van might partner with this ministry should it continue to grow and more seats are needed for quizzers and chaperones. Parents who wish to come as a spectator may be able to carpool.

PCNaz strongly believes in and has witnessed the value to our teens of the intensive study of the Word of God quizzing entails. Because of this, they offer scholarships to quizzers in their youth group and top quizzers to special events to reduce costs to families. We are hoping that, if able, the home church of a top quizzer who has demonstrated faithfulness in studying the Word and who has earned a place on a A (Gold) or B (Silver) team, might encourage and support them by helping to cover the cost of attending top-quizzer competitions.

Special event competitions vary in expenses. Fast food meals (or brought meals) are the responsibility of the individual quizzers while traveling. Inexpensive activities are a possibility on some away trips, such as visiting a state park.

  • 2021 Smoky Mountain Quizfest costs were $135 plus the cost of 6 fast food meals. This includes 3 night accommodations, 4 meals, 2 adventure activities, and transportation. Parents who wish to attend Quizfest (second weekend in August) as spectators are able to carpool and join the team in the adventure activities.

  • For Central Florida competitions, we are blessed to have a local church offer rooms at the church to stay on the Friday night before Saturday competitions (bringing own inflatable mattresses and sleeping bags.)  Quizzers may bring meals from home or money for fast food meals during the trip. Lunch is available during the central Florida quiz meets and is $5 for a Chick-fil-a sandwich, drink, chips, and dessert item.

The following events do not have a price determined yet:

  • TNT regional event (only for end-season top 10 quizzers in district)-tbd, but 2019 costs were $285 for teens (3 nights hotel and food included).

  • National event-tbd (only for top quizzers in the regional competition)

How does a teen get started?

The teen's parent should text "Quizzing" to (850.866.2483) and a coach will call you back as soon as possible to talk to you and/or your teen about the Waywalker league and answer any questions you may have. It is possible for a teen to join mid-season.  You can email carmen.tcomeaux@gmail.com or text 850.866.2483 to let us know you would like to observe or join our Sunday practice from 4-5:30.
